In Canada, autumn means the appearance of beautifully coloured bright orange and red leaves in our landscape. As days get colder and our personal style changes with the seasons, we gravitate towards richer fuller colours - browns, reds, beiges.
Carnelian is the perfect autumn stone. It is a powerful red/orange colour that is never flat or boring. It often resembles the colourful leaves that fall to the ground in the Canadian fall. Carnelian-agate has uniquely coloured bands that are embedded within the stone. Of all stone types, I find Carnelian to be the most diverse in its patterns and colour ways.
Red stones resonate with the base and sacral chakras and the planet Mars, energizing and initiating powerful action within us. The colour of vitality, orange stones resonate with the sacral chakra and sun.

The oldest carnelian beads date back to the early Neolithic period. It has been a popular choice for signet rings since Greek and Roman times. Carnelian was also a favoured stone of the emperors and empresses of Europe. In the 19th century, it was used widely in cameo carving. The Egyptians believed that this stone assisted the soul on its journey and had great protective powers in the afterlife. In 1632 the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan chose to decorate the Taj Mahal with carnelian because it was the favorite stone of his wife Queen Mumtaz. The Taj Mahal is a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture that incorporates Persian, Ottoman, and Islamic art and traditions. the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan decorated the Taj Mahal with a wide range of gems, jewels, and jeweled objects from his own collection, including carnelian, because it was a stone associated with royalty, fire, and good fortune. Carnelian was a popular gemstone during the Art Deco period. |
